PNY - 2022
The city of Strasbourg is known for being the first stop of the great Orient Express train that carried princesses and secret agents to the shore of Istanbul. PNY’s dna is very close to the American diner, which was originally made our of refurbished train carriages.
Our creativity nourished with our love for traveling, the idea quickly became to create the fantasied dining car for our new PNY restaurant, inspired both by Wong Kar Wai’s great 2046 movie and our idealized vision of an American mid-century carriage.
Like inside actual train cabins, the walls are divided into modules that hide and distribute all necessary appliances, here to make passengers feel at ease. Behind the walls hides the ventilation, the sound system, dim to warm lights, the cash register screen, storage room and glowing golden-hour like neons. At one end, in-wall mirrors reflect an identical carriage and create the illusion the continuity of the train.
Thanks to the vessel organization of the restaurant, the staff has more time to pamper guests and make them enjoy their time.
Convinced that the small details are what make a project full, a huge effort has been put into creating the perfect lines to hide disgraceful elements, ensuring the frontiers stay neat and clean. In the end, it is the project’s longitivtiy and its durability over time that is at stake, which is fondamental.
Just like the cream on an espresso, the Crema chair is round and soft. It has been brought back to its most simple structure, with its shape both reassuring and welcoming. Made of clear aluminium tubular, it is extremely light visually and physically. Every piece of furniture was designed specifically for the restaurant and created in France.
Small decoration elements were added as finishing touches : two beautiful wall sconces from Sergio Mazza, hooks and an Italian coat-rack from the 1930s, along with a Junghans clock from the 1920s overlooking the tiny yet very functional bar. All of these put together mixes the temporal lines.
